LOUISIANA, U.S.A. – Some of the top names we expect to see at the Paris Olympics this summer are already posting impressive performances early in their outdoor seasons.
Steven Gardiner ran 44.45 secs to finish first at the LSU alumni gold in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
It was Gardiner’s first 400 of the year and also his first since he was injured in the semifinals at last year’s world championships in Budapest.
Devynne Charlton and Anthonique Strachan opened their outdoor season on the first stop of the 2024 Wanda Diamond League Series in China.

At the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas, Shakeem Hall-Smith finished second in the 400m hurdles in 50.80 secs.
Also at the LSU mentioned above alumni gold was a pair of relay teams getting ready for next month’s world relays and still seeking Olympic qualification.

Rowing
One of the major events on the local rowing calendar, the 2024 Lake Cunningham Classic showcased the expansion of the sport.
The event featured teams from the Nassau Rowing Club, Windsor School, King’s College and Lyford Cay International School.
Sascha Proffitt of the Nassau Rowing Club won the women’s single scull.
In the women’s double scull, Emma Johnston and Priya Alexander of Windsor School took first place.
Windsor’s Isaiah Ellis won the men’s single scull and he teamed with Andre Forbes to win the double scull.
Flag Football
The Bahamas Youth Flag Football League saw major growth in its second Annual High School tournament.
The field grew from just four teams in 2023 to 10 teams this year.
Let’s revisit the U-14 championship game, Queen’s College got off to a promising start but in the end the big red machine was too efficient on both sides of the ball. They went on to win 24 – 6.
Those same U-14 boys went on to reach the championship in the over-14 division in a sac vs sac matchup.
In the end the younger Big Red Machine team won 22-8 led by the dynamic duo of quarterback Ayden Moss and wide receiver Wyatt Cartwright.
