MEXICO – Tropical Storm Barbara is steadily losing strength as it moves northwest, after briefly reaching hurricane status, the first of the Eastern Pacific season.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Barbara still poses potential hazards despite its weakening winds, which are currently near 60 mph. Forecasters warn that the storm could generate dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast and southern Baja California.

Barbara is expected to dissipate by Wednesday, with minimal impact to land beyond the coastal surf risks.

Meanwhile, another system, Tropical Storm Cosme, is churning far off the coast with sustained winds near 70 mph. Though stronger, Cosme is not expected to pose a threat to land at this time.

Officials continue to monitor both systems as the Eastern Pacific hurricane season gets underway.
