NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The government wiped away the BPL bills of qualified residents in parts of Abaco.

The Progressive Liberal Party calling it a good-hearted gesture, and the Free National Movement labeling it a political ploy.

The Davis administration defended its decision to wipe away the electricity bills of “qualifying” residents on Grand Cay and Moore’s Island, Abaco.

These residents were reportedly affected by long-standing electricity billing issues that arose in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian and were made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This came just two weeks before the general election, with the Free National Movement questioning the move, saying the PLP will do anything to hold on to power.

The Office of the Prime Minister’s communications director claimed that they’re simply cleaning up a mess the FNM made while they were in office.

“It would be an injustice for the government of The Bahamas to ask residents to do something, and then turn around and charge those residents for something the government had asked them to do.”

The FNM saw it differently.

At a packed rally at R.M. Bailey Park, candidate for North Abaco Terrece Bottle called the move too little, too late.

“Efforts like this are not sustained efforts. We need a plan.”)

Some residents disagree.

Social media messages show residents praising the move, including North Abaco Administrator Stephen Wilson.

Stephen Wilson – Administrator, North Abaco

“Any help to Grand Cay or Moore’s Island or any other island in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas where the government renders assistance will be welcomed.”

Latrae Rahming – Communications Director, Office of the Prime Minister

“The amount the government owes to BPL, they would simply produce a formula where they would absorb that debt or make that debt null.”
