HAITI – Haitian leaders have ousted Frantz Elbé, the director of Haiti’s national police, amid criticism of his handling of gang violence.

The Associated Press reports former police chief Normil Rameau will return to lead the underfunded force, which the U.N. says has about 4,000 officers for a population of over 11 million.

The U.N. reports gang violence has claimed over 2,500 lives in the first quarter of 2024, including nearly two dozen police officers.

Rameau’s appointment comes with the task of curbing violence as a new government takes charge.

The office of citizen protection praised his selection, urging swift action against gangs and the establishment of a security plan.
