NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Despite being homeless, a disabled woman is using the little resources she has to fight suicide.

It comes after the tragic death of her husband and other family tragedies.

Now, she’s made it her mission to help others from following a similar path.

Lydia King is using her story to save the lives of others but she says the start of her non-profit organization was rooted in tragedy.

Suicides are not uncommon here.

According to the 2024 crime statistics, there were eight confirmed suicides, with 50 attempted last year.

King says her goal is to educate, prevent, and assist those who’re still struggling.

But the journey has not been easy. She says a few years ago she was evicted from her apartment, this coupled with a disability has left her homeless.

She showed me her car which is piled with what little she now owns, a pillow and blanket visible in the back seat.

King is now encouraging those who want to help to contact her at The Bahamas Council of the Physically Disabled, Mentally Challenged at 818-3220.

While she is homeless, her focus is saving the lives of others.
