NASSAU, BAHAMAS – “Lyford Cay Foundations welcomed nearly 100 Alumni, Scholars, Board Members, partners, staff, and special guests to its Alumni Reception last month at the V&M Art Gallery for an evening centred on connection, reflection, and the enduring impact of educational opportunity.”

“The special gathering brought together members of the Lyford Cay Foundations community across generations and disciplines, celebrating the achievements of Alumni while encouraging continued engagement with the Foundations’ mission through mentorship, career development, partnership, and philanthropy.”

“Delivering the evening’s keynote reflection was Alumnus Mr. Philip Simon Jr., now President of Royal Caribbean-Bahamas, whose inspiring remarks traced his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the country’s most respected business leaders.”

“Mr. Simon reflected on receiving his first scholarship to attend The College of The Bahamas, now the University of The Bahamas, where he studied physics and mathematics, before later earning a second scholarship opportunity to pursue electrical engineering studies abroad at Texas Tech University. He went on to complete an MBA in entrepreneurship and finance at the University of Maryland’s Dingman Center, building a foundation that would shape a career spanning national development, infrastructure, tourism, and youth leadership.”

“The scholarship didn’t just provide financial support—it was a signal that said, you are capable, you are seen, and you are expected to do something meaningful with this opportunity,” Mr. Simon said. “It also came with an unspoken responsibility: to carry that excellence forward and to give back.”

“In recognition of his keynote address and continued example of leadership and service, Simon was presented with a token of appreciation by the Lyford Cay Foundation Inc, Chairman Basil P. Goulandris.”

“The Foundations also recognised Joy Jibrilu for the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board’s continued support as a scholarship partner, acknowledging the organisation’s role in helping expand educational access and opportunity for Bahamian students in the tourism sector.”

“The evening’s programme opened with welcome remarks from Executive Director Dr. Nicola Virgill-Rolle, who shared the importance of maintaining strong Alumni relationships and fostering a culture of engagement across the Foundations’ network.”

“This evening was intentionally designed to strengthen community,” said Dr. Virgill-Rolle. “Our Alumni represent the long-term impact of investment in education, leadership, and human potential. Their journeys continue to inspire the next generation of Scholars.”

“Special thanks were extended to Board Member Saskia D’Aguilar and the D’Aguilar Foundation for graciously hosting the reception at the V&M Art Gallery. The venue’s inspiring collection of Bahamian artwork provided a fitting backdrop for an evening celebrating national talent, creativity, and achievement.”

“The Foundations also recognised the generous support of Graham Thompson Attorneys-at-Law, whose sponsorship helped make the evening possible, and Board Member Judy Whitehead for her leadership in supporting the event through both her role on the Board and as a partner of the firm.”

“Closing remarks were delivered by Chairman Basil P. Goulandris, who encouraged Alumni, partners, and friends of the Foundations to remain engaged through mentorship, career support, advocacy, and annual giving opportunities that help strengthen pathways for future Scholars.”

“The Alumni Reception reflects Lyford Cay Foundations’ continued commitment to cultivating a lifelong community connected by a shared belief in education as a catalyst for national development.”
