NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Former BNT Executive Eric Carey is raising the alarm about a partially sunken barge off the northern coast of New Providence, saying the damage it could do to the reef it sits on could be irreparable.

President and CEO of One Consultants, Eric Carey, says he is disappointed that a sunken barge which has been sitting on the barrier reef since late 2022, is still there.

He originally posted his concern about the barge back in december of last year.

More than 75% of coral reefs in the Atlantic Ocean are threatened, and they support at least a quarter of marine life.

Carey’s main concern is what happens when a storm impacts the wreck.

And Carey assures us, the consequences would be felt above the waves as well.

The northern coast saw significant coastal flooding last hurricane season with hurricane Nicole last November.

Ocean waves forced road closures of major roads along the coastline, and Carey says with a compromised reef, surges would only get worse.
