NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world but where did the day honoring moms originate?

Every year the second Sunday in May is recognized as Mother’s Day. It’s a time when moms are recognized and celebrated for their unique roles in their children’s lives.

Like mothers themselves, the concept of “Mother’s Day” has been around since ancient times dating back to the Greeks and Romans.

But the Mother’s Day we know today, originated in the United States way back in the early 1900’s.

In 1907, Philadelphia native Anna Jarvis, who was famous for organizing women’s groups to promote friendship and health, held a memorial service at her late mother’s church. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 it was added to the American calendar.

More than one hundred years later, other countries like The Bahamas celebrate the day dedicated to moms, while some mark the observance at other times of the year.

This year on May 13th, millions of gifts will be given, homemade Mother’s Day cards will be created and countless hours will be spent with moms.
