NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, in 1891 – Emma Jane Poitier was born in Duncan Town, Ragged Island.

Poitier was a community activist and one of the leaders and supporters in the Women’s Suffrage Movement and an ardent supporter of the fledgling Progressive Liberal Party.

The historical society notes many of the early PLP meetings in the Mason’s Addition area were held on her front porch.

She is described as a fierce nationalist who supported every major event in Bahamian history that would eventually lead to its Independence.

Potier died on September 16th, 1983.

And, on April 24th, 2013 – then Minister of State for National Security Keith Bell accused the us government of passing challenges on to The Bahamas by deporting ex-cons to The Bahamas after serving time. Bell claimed at the time that 1,000 hardened criminals were dumped by the U.S. In The Bahamas.
