NEW YORK- U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres says gang violence has killed more than 2,300 people in Haiti since the start of the year.

Speaking at a news conference in Port-au-Prince, Guterres insisted gangs had paralyzed the state, the economy, education, and aid deliveries.

He also said the deployment of a new gang-suppression force offered a real chance to reduce violence and restore state authority.

Guterres called for faster and fuller deployment of the force, more support for Haiti’s political transition and recovery, and predictable funding for humanitarian aid.
