NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With just a few weeks left in the hurricane season, history has taught us that it only takes hours for a system to develop into a powerful storm. That means being prepared at all times.

Denielle Miller says while the season has been quiet so far, residents shouldn’t let their guard down.

“We’re three months into the hurricane season, and fortunately no hurricanes have made landfall. But we’re not out of the woods yet. As we enter the final stretch, you don’t want to be caught unprepared.”

Experts continue to warn that storms are becoming more powerful. What starts as a tropical wave can grow into a megastorm in less than a week, Hurricane Dorian in 2019 was a chilling reminder.

That’s why it’s always smart to stock up early on batteries, canned goods, flashlights, first aid kits, water, life jackets, and even building supplies.

For hardware stores like 21st Century Hardware, manager Crispen Clarke says business spikes the moment a storm threat is issued.

“Very busy, very volatile. It’s a mad rush all the time.”

Clarke says the most in-demand items include plywood, shingles, nails, roofing cement, and water shields. He also advises residents to invest in home repairs early, rather than waiting until the last minute.

“As hurricane season comes in, assess your roof so you’re not in danger. Times are hard and materials are expensive, so you don’t want to be caught with your pants down.”

Patron Henry Martin told us that in his household, preparation starts long before June 1st. He and his wife split the responsibilities.

“That’s a good thing, I don’t have to be two places at one time.”

As the season winds down, the message from officials and residents alike is clear: don’t wait until the last minute to get storm ready.
