NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Shortly after 10:30 on Thursday night, police alerted the media to a shooting in western New Providence.

When the Our News team arrived on West Bay Street, dozens of heavily armed officers, some carrying high-powered weapons, had already flooded the area, locking down the scene.

Crime scene investigators focused their attention on a white home through a small gated community.

The incident caused a major disruption along the busy Cable Beach strip, impacting nearby businesses and traffic in the area.

The shooting unfolded in a high-traffic tourist area, just steps away from Sandals Royal Bahamian and Curly’s Restaurant and Bar.

In fact, Curly’s was forced to shut its doors as police secured the area and processed the scene.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Anton Rahming says early indications suggest the shooting was a targeted attack.

“That male had arrived at the location alone. Once he came to that area, unknown persons exited what we believe to be an SUV vehicle and fired upon him, subsequently wounding him fatally. That vehicle left the area heading in an easterly direction.”

While police did not provide the victim’s identity at the scene, Our News has confirmed he is 55-year-old Mario Deveaux, also known as “Mario Fox,” a man known to law enforcement.

Back in 2017, Fox was one of eight men listed on a police wanted poster for murder, released by then Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade.

Investigators are working to determine whether that past history may be connected to Thursday night’s killing.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to canvass the area and review surveillance footage as they piece together what led up to the shooting.

Police are also renewing their appeal to the public for information.

Additionally, our Crime Stoppers number, 328-TIPS, can be used to provide any information that can bring this matter to some resolution.”
