Golden Yolk Project Still Ramping Up Amid Egg Price Hike

It’s a practice many Bahamians have taken more seriously in recent days as the price of eggs have skyrocketed.

And thanks to a highly contagious bird flu sweeping U.S. Poultry supply, those prices in the United States are expected to increase more than 20 percent in the coming year.

With that in mind, many are looking for updates on the $15 million dollar Golden Yolk Project, aiming to secure 100 percent local egg production.

The B.A.I.C. Chairman gave this update.

“There are 4 more houses that are being imported currently as we speak. Three houses are currently on island and so we are making good progress at present the land has been cleared and we expect to make some progress on getting this project up and running in short order,” says Pickstock

In the mean time, we’ve highlighted how local Bahamian egg producers and school agriculture programs have stepped in to provide reasonably priced eggs for Bahamians, it’s something Pickstock says we should carry forward as a general rule when shopping.

“The motto is Buy Bahamian, Buy Bahamian, Buy Bahamian, Buy Bahamian. We have local opportunities here. Again it’s an opportunity to scale up. That’s where the opportunity lie, in scaling up. But we do recognize that they do need some help, that local farmers do need help, local egg producers do need help. And that as a government we are prepared to help local farmers and we are helping local farmers to scale up, and local egg producers.” says Pickstock
