NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahama Hand Prints is known for its bold, authentic designs. Each handmade piece is like a kaleidoscope, bursting with color, culture, and creativity, offering a glimpse into the mind of the artist.

In the next installment of our Boldly Bahamian series, we take you behind the scenes to see how these iconic prints come to life.

“Bahama Hand Prints is a collection of beautiful pieces with colors, patterns, and designs, but have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of these incredible creations? Let me show you.”

The company’s veteran artist and printer, Leslie Williams, served as our guide on this creative journey.

We began in the art room, where each design starts as a large hand-drawn stencil. Once complete, the stencil is carefully washed to remove imperfections.

“I ain’t ga wet you,” Leslie joked as he cleaned the stencil before setting it outside to dry.

Once dry, it’s placed into a screen printing carriage, an essential tool for transferring the design from stencil to fabric.

“So the next step is to prepare my inks, set up my ink stand, and choose the colors. In this case, I’m going with the same green that’s on that print. And we’re printing on this table only,” Leslie explained.

Of course, I had to get in on the action.

“I’m putting on my apron because I’m officially reporting for duty. I’m going to help paint, well, print, the fabric. I’m getting down and dirty. Alright, I ready.”

It’s a precise technique that takes practice. I struggled at first, but with Leslie’s help, I eventually found my groove, and it quickly became addictive.

Even my cameraman, Troy, couldn’t resist trying it for himself.

Watching the colors and patterns take shape on the fabric gave me a renewed sense of pride. These designs aren’t just beautiful, they’re handcrafted proof of the incredible talent we have right here in The Bahamas.
