Celebrating Rich History And Culture

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Fox Hill celebrated 187 years of freedom with music, dancing, traditional foods, and cultural activities, as residents and community leaders highlighted the village’s African ancestry and historical significance.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hundreds of residents filled Freedom Park last night to celebrate a legacy going back 187 years, when slaves in Fox Hill learned they were free, ten days after the rest of the island.

The festivities included music, dancing, and traditional foods.

Fox Hill native and FNM candidate Dr. Nicholas Fox says the event has been close to his heart since childhood.

“Fox Hill is a historical village with a lot of history, slavery, freedom. Every year, we come together to celebrate, and it’s something Foxhillians look forward to.”

Many of the day’s activities highlight African ancestry, including climbing the greasy pole and pole plaiting, with even the younger generation participating in traditional dress.

Beverly Wallace Whitfield, soon turning 98, emphasizes the importance of remembering local history.
