NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The unregulated community action task force is on the move once again, this time in North Andros.

Twenty-eight-day eviction notices were laid on several structures in an area known as “Heastie Farms”.

Building control officer in the Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs Craig Delancey says they’ve begun the process of getting rid of the illegal community.

Shantytowns have been a problem for decades. Successive governments have tried to address the issue.

Poorly constructed homes, unsanitary conditions and limited to no utilities are just some of the reasons they’re being demolished Across the country.

The task force recently had a five-day mission in Andros – which was headed by the Officer-In-Charge Superintendent Stephen Carey.

Carey says while it was expected to be a routine assessment – they were in for a surprise.

This is not the first family islands community slated for demo.

Two hundred structures in Abaco and over 200 in Eleuthera were also flattened last year.

Overall, the count stands at six total with residents in three communities waiting timidly as demolition dates have been set.

Last month – the Department of Social Services – setting the record straight that only those living there with Bahamian status, citizenship or are permanent residents would receive assistance.

Traveling with the team was Chief Social Worker of Family Island Disaster, Michelle Collie, who says they are committed to just that.
