Eight People Missing, 17 Dead in Suspected Human Smuggling Operation

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Eight people are still missing as rescue and recovery efforts continue in waters off New Providence, after a boat carrying dozens of people capsized.

Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander say police believe 50-60 suspected Haitian migrants were on a 30-foot twin-engine vessel when it capsized seven miles off New Providence around 1am, Sunday.

So far, officials can account for 42 individuals who were on-board that vessel. That figure includes 17 deceased, among them, a girl between four- and five-years-old.

Immigration Minister Keith Bell says it appears the passengers paid $3000-8000 for passage on the ill-fated vessel.

Law enforcement officials expect charges to be brought related to this incident, once the investigation is complete.

Prime Minister Philip Davis used the opportunity to send condolences to the families of victims, while condemning acts of human smuggling.
“We take this opportunity to condemn human smuggling. We appeal to those considering making such a voyage not to do so,” PM Davis added.
