Former Sergeant Loses Bid To Overturn Police Dismissal

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former police sergeant accused by U.S. Federal prosecutors of accepting bribes from alleged drug and firearms traffickers has lost his bid to overturn his dismissal from the Royal Bahamas police force.

Justice Franklyn Williams KC ruled that Albert Symonette Jr. did not have a valid contract at the time of his dismissal.

The judge refused Symonette’s application for judicial review, as well as his requests for damages and an order overturning his dismissal.

Symonette was fired in December 2024, after being named in a U.S. Federal indictment alleging corruption involving Bahamian law enforcement officers.

He retired as a police sergeant in 2017 but continued working with the force under a series of one-year contracts.

Justice Williams found that Symonette’s final contract had expired in November 2023, the court therefore rejected his challenge to the dismissal.

Now no request has been made for Symonette’s extradition to the United States.
