NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A judge has set a date for the retrial of two police officers charged with the death of a man in police custody.

Constables 2126 Akiel Smith and 2648 Carl Smith are charged with manslaughter in the February 9th, 2013 death of 20-year-old Aaron Rolle.

The armed robbery suspect was found dead in a cell at the Quakoo Street police station.

Following a coroner’s inquest into the death, the officers were charged with manslaughter in 2016.

However, a judge directed an acquittal in May 2018.

The decision was reversed on appeal and a retrial was ordered.

Senior Justice Bernard Turner has set a retrial date for July 31, 2023.

The officers are free on bail.
