NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Months after officials announced the formation of a commission that will review The Bahamas high school diploma, the group has hit the ground running holding the first of many town meetings last night. Those in attendance had their questions answered from a panelist of education officials.

The Bahamas High School Diploma National Review Commission has started its consultation process.

They’re seeking input from the wider population on the criteria for obtaining a high school diploma.

So what are the requirements?

Well, there are eight of them that include: a 2.0 GPA, at least 90 percent attendance and punctuality, 30 community service hours, 20 job readiness training hours and 3 parent teacher conferences.

Another requirement, a student must obtain at least 4 BJC’s with a passing grade.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary, Keyshan Bastian explains the reason for the criteria is that the national exams level the playing field across the country.

Those in attendance were also surveyed for their suggestions on what should remain and what they feel should be eliminated on the current list of requirements.

Now, a number of town hall meetings will be held throughout the rest of the Family Islands.
