One Confirmed Case of Cholera on New Providence

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 52-year-old Bahamian man with a recent history of travel has tested positive for cholera on New Providence.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness says the patient went to a private medical facility, Thursday, with vomiting and diarrhea. He was admitted and isolated, pending screening for suspected cholera, which has since been confirmed via lab test.

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Health, the man is currently receiving treatment and is listed in stable condition. Disease Surveillance is monitoring the situation along with other relevant government agencies as is standard operating practice.

Symptoms of cholera include profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, thirst, leg cramps, restlessness and irritability. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease and can take anywhere from 12 hours to 5 days to manifest after ingesting contaminated food or water.

Members of the public are advised to use and drink safe water and to practice proper handwashing while preparing food and after using the restroom.

The Ministry of Health says cholera is not endemic to The Bahamas. The last case of cholera in the country was recorded in 2017.
