NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Lawmakers are debating a resolution to increase minimum wages from $210 to $260 weekly.

Prime Minister Philip Davis leading debate, saying while the increase doesn’t eliminate the economic strain on families, it’s a help, and another step toward a livable wage.

The increase is retroactive to July in the public sector.

For those working in the private sector, they have to wait until January. The last time we saw an increase in the minimum wage was 2015.

East Grand Bahama Member of Parliament Kwasi Thompson says while the Opposition supports the increase, it believes other actions will hinder the benefits.
