HIV Cases Decline More than 50% Over Last 10 Years

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The world and The Bahamas are on a mission to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030 and according to the Director of the National HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases Program the country is getting closer to meeting that target.

The Bahamas is seeing a decline in positive HIV/AIDS cases, according to Director of the National HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases Program Dr. Nikkiah Forbes.

She says the number of AIDS deaths are down as well, having reduced to about 39 percent over the past ten years.

She says The Bahamas is getting closer to meeting the United Nations fast track targets to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

As for the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to baby, Dr. Forbes says there’s a very robust program in place to prevent those cases.
