NASSAU, BAHAMAS – One cabinet minister is coming to the defense of his government’s plans to shift Value Added Tax.

Free Town Member Of Parliament Wayne Munroe QC says Bahamians should do the math for themselves.

Berthony McDermott reports.

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe maintains that the argument that low-income families will be hardest hit by the reintroduction of value added tax across the board is offensive to them.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Philip Davis said the VAT decrease will come no later that January 1st.

However, the revelation that there will be no VAT exemptions came from Minister for Economic Affairs Michael Halkitis.

That means vat will be placed on things like medication, school fees and breadbasket items.

The Free Town MP believes families will spend less at the grocery stores.

He’s inviting Bahamians to do the math for themselves.

Munroe says the former administration’s VAT policy only rewarded large businesses.
