UNITED STATES – U.S. Republican Kevin McCarthy lost two votes for House Speaker, yesterday.

McCarthy is the leading republican candidate to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi but has struggled to win the support of a small group of right-wing republicans.

The California congressman needed a 218 majority but last-minute concessions failed to convince a number of more conservative republicans.

It’s the first time in a century that a speaker has not been elected in the opening round of voting.

President Joe Biden is facing a Republican majority for the first time but democrats remain in control of the Senate.
