VENEZUELA – The International Court of Justice announced it would deliver a ruling on Thursday on Venezuela’s preliminary objection in its border dispute case with Guyana.

Venezuela’s preliminary objection in the case centres on their belief that the court lacks jurisdiction to hear Guyana’s application for it to settle the border dispute since the United Kingdom is a necessary party to the proceedings.

Guyana filed the case in March 2018 asking that the court declare that: “The 1899 award is valid and binding upon Guyana and Venezuela, and the boundary established by that award and the 1905 agreement is valid and binding upon Guyana and Venezuela.”
