NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Following that landmark ruling from the Privy Council, former Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson says the recent ruling emphasizes ongoing discrimination against women that much she says is clear.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Following that landmark ruling from the Privy Council, former Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson says the recent ruling emphasizes ongoing discrimination against women that much she says is clear.
The landmark ruling by the Privy Council upheld a decision by now Chief Justice Sir Ian Winder that all children born out of wedlock to foreign women and Bahamian men are citizens at birth.
Maynard-Gibson says she’s hopeful the government will move to address the issue from a legislative standpoint.
She says the recent ruling sends a strong signal that shouldn’t be ignored.
Maynard-Gibson says while the government has carefully weighed how this will be implemented, she’s hoping the rights of Bahamian women aren’t caught up, and as a result hindered.
