Sustainability First: Reducing Food Imports and Improving Food Security
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A study from the University of Sydney released last year found the greenhouse gas emissions caused by food transportation are up to seven times higher than previously estimated, finding that approximately three gigatons, that’s 3 billion tons, of emissions are released every year due to food transportation.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A study from the University of Sydney released last year found the greenhouse gas emissions caused by food transportation are up to seven times higher than previously estimated, finding that approximately three gigatons, that’s 3 billion tons, of emissions are released every year due to food transportation.
That’s almost 20 percent of global food system greenhouse gas emissions, and nearly six percent of emissions from all sources.
Here in The Bahamas, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture are looking to reduce food imports and improve food security. They say the first step is making processes within the industry more accessible, especially for farmers and fisheries on the family islands through MyGateway.
