NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A judge has revoked bail for a man charged with a 2016  armed robbery for violating his bail conditions and for his personal safety.

Prosecutors asked Justice Andrew Forbes to revoke 42-year-old Meshack Newton’s bail after he missed a court date in 2024 because he had been arrested in Florida for human smuggling.

Newton pleaded guilty in the human smuggling case earlier this year and was sentenced to six months in prison. He was deported to The Bahamas after completing his sentence.

On September 14, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m. officers attached to the Palm Beach County marine enforcement unit stopped a boat captained by Newton with eight undocumented migrants onboard.

When interviewed by a Special Agent from Homeland Security the following day, Newton said that he had smuggled the migrants for a friend.

Newton also said he wanted to stay in The Bahamas because there was “a bounty on him for a situation involving missing drugs.”

Justice Forbes  revoked Newton’s bail “both as a  consequence of his violation of bail conditions and as a  means of ensuring his personal safety.”

Newton’s trial on the armed robbery charge is set for May 2027.
