Coleby-Davis: Mitigation Underway, Penalties to be Determined

EXUMA, BAHAMAS – An investigation and report will determine who is responsible for 30,000 gallons spilled in Exuma waters early Wednesday morning.

Transport Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis says the National Oil Spill Committee will determine mitigation measures, and an investigation will be conducted.

“There will be a meeting convened with the National Oil Spill Committee to discuss mitigation methods and the investigation report they would have to receive, once it’s completed. And then they would move on any penalties that would be coming,” Coleby-Davis says.

She says that matter will be dealt with in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, and the office of the Attorney General.

Once the report confirms who is responsible for the spill, penalties will follow. Those penalties will be determined by the Ministry of the Environment, Department of Environmental Planning and Protection, and guided by the office of the Attorney General.
