GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Philippa Carey claims Mervie Knowles, the owner of a Home Away from Home took her childhood home away from her mother and with that the standoff continues.

Carey claims she placed her grandmother, who she calls her mom,  in a Home Away From Home back in December 2023 as a last resort.

Carey says the difficult decision came as she had to take a job off the island to care for her mother, Ingrid Carey.

But things took a surprising twist for her when she found out that Mervie Russell, the owner of a Home Away From Home attained ownership of the home she grew up in.

She also alleges Knowles now has power of attorney over her mother and is collecting other benefits on behalf of Ingrid.

Now Carey says her mother was never clinically diagnosed, but previously battled depression and other mental conditions.

But Knowles told me on Thursday she took Ingrid to seek medical attention and claims doctors told her Ingrid didn’t have dementia.

After the story aired on a local station, many came out Thursday morning in support of Carey.

When we spoke to Knowles she said she felt terrible about the entire ordeal.

She also claimed the entire story making the rounds on social media is not true.

She claims Ingrid made the decision on her own.

A joint statement from the Ministry for Grand Bahama and the Department of Social Services said it is committed to a full investigation into this matter.

Meanwhile, Carey says she plans to try to get her mother out of that home but it will come at a cost.
