UNITED STATES – The United Nations says nearly 1.5 million people in Haiti had been displaced as of May this year, with 95,000 newly displaced between December last year and May.

According to the latest reports, violence in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area has pushed the number of displaced people to more than 300,000 for the first time. There has also been a sharp rise in the number of people returning to their communities. More than 165,000 people have returned, compared with just over 87,500 returnees recorded in December.

Food, livelihoods, shelter, water and sanitation, and access to healthcare remain the most urgent needs for both displaced people and returnees.
