NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 25-year-old is behind bars after being charged with killing a 72-year-old woman over the weekend.

Jayvon Forbes, the man who police believe raped and killed 72-year-old Vernencha Butler early Saturday morning was arraigned in the Magistrate’s Court Wednesday afternoon.

Butler was killed after a man broke into her home on Ross Corner before 3 a.m. Police believe the killer entered her home through a front room window.

Police said an autopsy also revealed she suffered internal injuries.

In court Wednesday, Forbes was charged with sexually assaulting butler before strangling her to death.

The 24-year-old was also charged with burglary but did not enter a plea during his appearance before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

He is set to return to court on February 27, 2025, when prosecutors are expected to present a voluntary bill of indictment.

Now, Forbes’ attorney informed the court that his client has been receiving death threats while in custody at the Central Police Station, which resulted in him being placed in isolation.

The attorney has asked the court to make a similar recommendation for his client while he is on remand at the Bahamas Department of Corrections.
