NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A murder suspect has been sentenced to two years in prison after escaping from the cellblock at the Magistrate’s Court complex last October.

36-year-old D’angelo Culmer was captured on Thursday after being the subject of a nationwide manhunt for almost eight months.

Acting Assistant Chief Magistrate Shaka Serville handed Culmer the maximum sentence despite his guilty plea.

Culmer said that he had been falsely accused of the murder and escaped from the lockup without any help from police officers.

Culmer is accused of murder and two counts of attempted murder stemming from a shooting at Ragged Island street on January 31, 2024.

Rudishka Bethel was killed, and Carla Bain and Lorenzo Sands were injured as a result.

Three police officers facing internal disciplinary charges in relation to his escape have been suspended from duty.
