NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On Father’s Day Police Reserve Inspector, Lernex Williams, was ambushed and killed by a group of men, leaving family and friends devastated by the tragedy.

On the day he died, Reserve Inspector Lernex Williams was supposed to pick up his mother, Mary Stovel, from the airport.

However, after getting the news of his shooting, his mother landed to the devastating news.

Family members tell us where they were when they got the devastating news:

Anette Bethel – Cousin of Lernex Williams

“We were just about to sit down and have a Father’s Day meal. We were sitting and then my sister said oh no, we can’t sit, we have to leave. On the way back to the car she mentioned that he was shot. I assumed he was shot and taken to hospital, [and] we were going to ride there and see how he was,” Bethel said.

Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Another cousin of Williams, Aaaron Jones, was forced to quickly leave church and rush to the scene after getting the word from multiple sources that his cousin was tragically gunned down on Father’s Day.

As he traveled to Royal Bank of Canada in the Palmdale Shopping Centre, Jones told us that he prayed, hoping the news wasn’t true. However, when he got there, he was forced to face the harsh reality.

“When I got there, [I met] my family…[and] their faces showed emotions of a result that was not there. So immediately I just started to pray and…covered the site, but unfortunately those prayers didn’t work in my favor, but it worked in God’s favor,” Jones said.

Williams was shot and killed at the Royal Bank of Canada Sunday morning when he was ambushed by a group of men while depositing money.

Jones remembered Williams as a fun and caring family member who was always bringing family together. Meanwhile, Bethel says the family is relying on prayer:

“We’re drawing strength from each other, and a lot of us are Christians, so we rely on prayer. I find myself most of yesterday asking God for strength,” she said.

Williams was an active member in his church and was President of the Anglican Men’s Church group.

On the scene, Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles told us that there was an exchange of gunfire resulting in two of the men being shot.

However, around four men left the scene in a small, white vehicle shortly after the shooting.

Jones says that the tragic killing occurred as the family is still reeling from the death of William’s son, who passed away on his birthday in May 2020 after an accident at a pool party.

The incident prompting the family to call for capital punishment.

“What do these people think when they are taking a life that does not belong to them. It also makes you think, when are we going to introduce capital punishment. How many more mothers have to scream out into the road,” Bethel said.
