NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) officially opened a new Domestic Violence Unit, designed to provide support and resources to survivors of domestic violence. The center was inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and spiritual blessing.

Shanta Knowles – Commissioner, RBPF
“And where justice is not delayed but is delivered with care, clarity, and conviction. This building is more than brick and mortar. It represents a new standard, a bold reimagining of what it means to protect and serve survivors of domestic violence.”

The facility is the result of efforts by Prime Minister Philip Davis and his wife, Ann Marie Davis, who have been dedicated to addressing domestic violence in the country.

Philip Davis – Prime Minister
“To do better and to care more. This unit wasn’t created for statistics or for press releases. It was created for that woman who has packed her bag a dozen times trying to find the right moment to leave. It was created for the child who flinches at raised voices because they’ve learned what comes next.”

The center offers interview and counseling spaces, a victim support liaison trained in first aid, and a real-time database to track cases and trends.

Wayne Munroe K.C. – Minister, National Security
“This is very short-term housing. So if you have to get out now, you might be concerned if you have nowhere to go. This is not a shelter for long-term housing.”

CARIFTA 2025 Games Kick Off in Trinidad & Tobago

The 2025 CARIFTA Games officially began at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad & Tobago under the theme “Igniting Passion, Fueling Dreams.” The opening ceremony was highlighted by an address from Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Stuart Young, who declared the games open at precisely 4:04 PM.

In his speech, Prime Minister Young emphasized the critical role sports play in the Caribbean and vowed that he, along with other CARICOM leaders, would continue to invest in the youth of the region.

But it was the Parade of Athletes that truly energized the stadium. Team Bahamas, comprising athletes from both swimming and athletics, were a fan favorite as they paraded into the stadium. Notable members of the team included Ayrton Moncur, Mia Patton, Annae Mackey, and Jeheil Smikle, who proudly carried the Bahamian flag.

Mike Sands, a Bahamian and President of NACAC, also addressed the crowd, stressing that sports serve as a beacon of hope in areas where despair might otherwise prevail.

The morning sessions for both athletics and swimming began at 9:00 AM, and the evening sessions for both events are expected to be underway as the competition continues.
