NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A witness in the trial of Long Island MP Adrian Gibson and five others has admitted to lying to police during her interview.

Tanya Demeritte, who was previously charged in the case, testified today that taking a plea deal that avoided jail time was “the best option.”

As part of the plea agreement, Demeritte was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the Water and Sewerage Corporation.

Demeritte revealed that the mother of Gibson’s former fiancée Alexandria Mackey paid the money for her.

Demeritte became a director and shareholder of Elite Maintenance, a company that was awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in contracts to the Water and Sewerage Corporation as a favor to Mackey.

She has said that she never signed any contracts with the corporation and suggested that her signature was forged.

Asked her about her previous lies to police, Demeritte said, “I was confused. I didn’t know how I got myself in this mess; this foolishness.”

Gibson is on trial along with Elwood Donaldson Jr, Rashae Gibson, Jerome Missick, Peaches Farquharson and Joann Knowles.

The trial concerns the awarding of contracts by the Water and Sewerage Corporation while Gibson served as its executive chairman
