Don Saunders’ Children: “This Year Has Been One of Tremendous Growth and Healing”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Losing a parent is not easy and if you ask Danielle and Don Jr., losing their father, Don Sr. has been the toughest thing they’ve ever dealt with in their lives.

Former Deputy House Speaker Don Saunders Sr. was tragically gunned down a year ago outside a bar in Gambier Village.

It was a story that gripped headlines locally and internationally for weeks.

But for Danielle and Don Jr. he was more than just a headline; he was their father and their friend, a man among men and a pillar for their family.

One year later, they say there are still good days and bad days.

In the midst of it all, Don Jr. made the CARIFTA Aquatics Team last year and again this year.

He says swimming has become an outlet for him in more ways than one.

For Danielle, her outlet is going to the gym.

They say support has also been an important part of the healing process.

“Our church community has been a powerful source of spiritual support offering prayers, kind words and a sense of peace during moments of deep sadness,” Danielle said.

Don Jr. added that many of the support the family has received came from unfamiliar faces.

“Believe it or not, so that shows me that what my father did in the community actually mattered and people remembered him for his good deeds and it trickled on to our family,” he said.

And for Saunders’ wife, Tiffany that support goes a long way.

“The struggle is still there but through prayers and encouraging words, motivation from others, it helps us daily so we just take it one day at a time,” she said.
