BPL COO: “Our Crews Are Ready For Whatever Comes Our Way”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Tropical Storm Erin is expected to strengthen soon, prompting Bahamian officials and utilities to prepare and urge residents, especially in the southern islands, to secure their properties.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – All eyes are on Tropical Storm Erin, which hurricane forecasters expect to strengthen into the first hurricane, and possibly a major hurricane, of the 2025 season within days.

Current projections do not show a direct hit to the Bahamas, but officials remain vigilant.

State Minister for Disaster Risk Management, Leon Lundy, says his team has been preparing for months and is now closely monitoring Erin’s progress.

While it’s still too early to pinpoint the storm’s exact path, residents in the southern islands are urged to start making preparations now.

On location, Cambridge reports that if Erin shifts southwest, Bahamas Power and Light crews are ready to respond.

Anthony Christie, COO of Bahamas Power and Light, said, “We anticipate by Sunday, we’ll know exactly what is gonna happen to it, where it’s gonna turn or come more toward the south. Our teams are bracing themselves to respond to any incidents, whether flooding, pool damage, or otherwise. Managers update me regularly on the situation.”

Officials urge customers to trim trees away from power lines and secure their properties to ensure faster restoration if the storm impacts the area.

Christie also added that they’re working closely with the National Emergency Management Agency to monitor Erin’s track. “The Disaster Risk Management team holds weekly meetings with our representatives involved. We coordinate hurricane preparedness, including resources, equipment shipments, and communications with BTC, island administrators, and other key agencies.”
