BLTA Election Process Under Heavy Scrutiny

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – High drama surrounds the upcoming Annual General Meeting and elections of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association, with both the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the Bahamas Olympic Committee calling for a delay in the process.

In a letter to BLTA President Perry Newton, the ministry referenced a July 22nd Court of Appeal ruling which invalidated the 2021 AGM and directed that membership applications be processed in keeping with the BLTA’s constitution.

The ministry emphasized that membership processes must remain transparent and inclusive, and advised the BLTA to postpone elections until all outstanding issues are resolved to ensure fairness and good governance.

Meanwhile, in an email to stakeholders, Bahamas Olympic Committee President Romell Knowles confirmed that the matter will be referred to the International Tennis Federation and that the BLTA will be flagged “in dispute status” until further guidance is provided.

With the BLTA elections initially scheduled for September 13th, questions now linger about the future of the association’s governance and hOw soon a resolution can be reached.

WNBA

The New York Liberty ended the year with a 91 – 86 win over the Chicago Sky.

JJ finished with seven points, four assist, three rebounds and one block.

That blocked gave her 134 for her career – 6th all time in Liberty history and 15th all time in WNBA history.

New York finished the season at 27-17 and as the 5th seed will take on the 4th seeded Phoenix Mercury in round one of the playoffs.

Game 1 is Sunday at 5pm in Phoenix, game 2 will be Wednesday at 7:30pm in New York, and game 3 if necessary will be back in Phoenix Friday night.

Boxing

Boxing was one of the sports that first put The Bahamas on the map internationally, but in recent years, the young talent has slipped through cracks.

The Bahamas Boxing Academy Project looks to change that.

Stakeholders hosted the media Thursday to a comprehensive update on the development of the project which is intended to become a national center for boxing.

The latest addition to the Queen Elizabeth Sports Center, the project looks to revitalize a once thriving local boxing program.
