“I Pushed the Bush Away and Discovered That There Was a Baby”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, Acharro Gaitor was on his morning walk through the Marshall Road community when he heard strange cries in the distance. To his amazement, it was a newborn baby.

“It sounded like a cat, right? But you know, being a father of three, I know what a baby sounds like. And I just went and started to kind of push the bush away and discovered that there were a baby. Literally in the bushes with the umbilical cord still attached to the body and wrapped around the neck.”

Police alerted the media around 10 a.m., saying the baby was still conscious and was transported to the hospital.

It was along this tract road behind this stack of sticks, where the baby boy, believed to be less than a day old, was found.

Despite the distressing scene, he says his first instinct was to pray.

“I didn’t want to get hands on, but I was there praying for the baby. But I called, eventually, called my wife. She came with a blanket and we kind of wrapped the baby in a blanket and made sure that the baby was secured.”

The desolate mangrove area was home to stray dogs, which makes it even more harmful conditions.

Gaitor says the thought of what could’ve happened still has him shaken — especially after seeing how high the water later rose in the area.

“If the child was still there with the water this high, the child would’ve drowned. Yeah, because the way the child head was down like this. It don’t have the strength to move his head from this water.”

Now hailed as a hero, Gaitor says he’s not seeking praise — only compassion for the child’s mother.

“I’m going by the hospital to check on the child. Definitely, I’m going to check on that child. And I just hope at the end of the day, if the mother comes forward, I’m hoping to have her hands on, talk with her to encourage her.”
