NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – This year they were dominant from day one, maybe it got close for a while, but ultimately the latest chapter in the BAISS Track and Field rivalry goes to the SAC Big Red Machine.

After entering the final day with just a 42-point lead, SAC pulled away to finish with 1,392 points. Defending champions Queen’s College were second with 1,184 points while Temple Christian finished third with 538.

Several athletes also hit CARIFTA qualifying marks and broke BAISS records.

SAC’s Darvinique Dean won the under-20 girls 400 meters hurdles in a record 59.56 seconds to qualify for both CARIFTA and the world under-20 championships, while CARIFTAnfour-time gold medalist Jahcario Wilson set a new BAISS record in the under-20 boys 400 hurdles in 51.97 seconds.

St. John’s College star Jazae Johnson also continued her strong meet, winning the under-17 girls 200 meters in a record 23.57 seconds, under both the CARIFTA and world under-20 standards.

NCAA Basketball

For several teams conference tournaments are that final opportunity to earn automatic bids into the NCAA tournament.

Florida International University is moving on to the semifinals of the Conference USA Women’s basketball tournament after a 76-66 quarterfinal win over Jacksonville State.

Rhema Collins contributed nine points and eight rebounds in the win as FIU advanced to Friday’s semifinal.

In men’s college basketball, Bahamian forward AJj Storr had 18 points to help Ole Miss defeat Texas 76-66 the opening round.

They face the Georgia Bulldogs tonight in round two.

And assistant coach Mikhail McLean helped guide Kentucky to a 78-72 win over Missouri in the second round.

The Wildcats now advance to face top-seeded florida in the quarterfinals on Friday.

NCAA Track & Field

Several Bahamians are scheduled to compete at the NCAA Divison I indoor championships

The two-day national meet will be held March 13th and 14th at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Among the Bahamian qualifiers is Wanya McCoy of the Florida Gators track and field, who will compete in the men’s 200 meters with preliminary rounds set for Friday, March 13th and the final scheduled for Saturday, March 14th.

Fellow Gator Quincy Penn will compete in the 4x400m relay.

Javonya Valcourt of the Tennessee volunteers track and field will also be in action in the women’s 400 meters, with the semifinals on Friday and the final on Saturday if she advances.

Also qualifying are Alan Hanna of the Kansas State Wildcats track and field, who will compete in the men’s high jump final on Saturday, March 14th, and Antoine Andrews of the Texas Tech Red Raiders track and field, who will run in the men’s 60 meter hurdles preliminaries on friday with the final set for Saturday.
