ABACO, BAHAMAS – In less than 10 days the dome community in Spring City, Abaco will come down displacing hundreds of residents that now call those domes home.

While they say they knew the living accommodations were meant to be a temporary fix, the eight-day timeline is just too sudden for some.

August 27th is the date set by the Minister of Housing, Jobeth Colbey-Davis, for Abaconians currently residing in the domes in Spring City to be gone. According to the minister, families will be given $4000 upon moving out.

However, single mother, Rodenia Roker says given the lack of adequate housing as well as the high cost of rent, it’s simply not feasible.

Denrodo Roker says he understands the domes were only meant to be temporary, but he is calling on government to be understanding as well.

And while the government has raised concerns over the safety of residents in the dome city, Roker says he is confident that people would not risk their lives in another hurricane.

District Superintendent of Education, Dominique Russell, lived in one of the government provided trailers for two years while working on the island. She says she empathizes with those that will soon be forced to move out.

Now residents of the dome community say they want a face-to-face meeting with Minister Colbey-Davis to express their concerns.
