BERMUDA – Former Bermuda Premier Sir John Swan, the island’s longest-serving premier and one of its most influential businessmen, has died at the age of 90.

Born with visual impairment and dyslexia, he overcame significant challenges through determination and ambition.

He entered politics in 1972 and served in Parliament for 25 years, holding several cabinet portfolios before becoming premier in 1982 – a position he held for more than 13 years until 1995.

In recognition of his contributions, Sir John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE).

He was also inducted into the Bermuda Business Hall of Fame in 2010 as one of its first four members.
