NICARAGUA – Team Bahamas’ quest for a spot in the 2027 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup suffered a major setback Friday as The Bahamas was eliminated from championship contention with a 74-59 quarterfinal loss to the U.S. Virgin Islands at the FIBA Women’s Centrobasket Qualifiers in Managua, Nicaragua.

The turning point came just six minutes into the contest when tournament leading scorer Lashann Higgs, who entered the game averaging 25 points per game, left with a knee injury.

The Bahamas struggled to replace her offensive production for the remainder of the game.

Despite the setback, Rhema Collins turned in one of her best performances of the tournament, finishing with a dominant 20-point, 16-rebound double-double, while also adding three steals, one block and one assist.

Valerie Nesbitt contributed 16 points and four assists, while Madison Reckley chipped in eight points.

The Bahamas erased an early deficit with a 10-0 second-quarter run to take a 30-23 lead, but the U.S. Virgin Islands responded after the break.

A 10-0 run in the third quarter turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead, and the Virgin Islands never looked back.

The Bahamas will now shift its attention to the fifth through eighth-place classification round, where they will face Guyana.

Liberty’s Game Postponed; Jones Named to “Team Coop”

Jonquel Jones and the New York Liberty never took the floor Thursday night after their game against the Dallas Wings was postponed due to significant travel delays caused by severe weather and mechanical issues that left the team stranded in New York for more than 10 hours.

The game has been rescheduled for July 20th.

Despite the postponement, Jones has three more games before the all-star break where she will make the sixth WNBA all-star appearance of her career.

Jones was selected as a reserve for Team Spoon, which will be coached by WNBA legend Teresa Weatherspoon.

Her team features stars including Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Aliyah Boston, Olivia Miles, Jessica Shepard, Nneka Ogwumike, Rhyne Howard, Sonia Citron, Skylar Diggins, Satou Sabally, and Alyssa Thomas.

Team Spoon will take on Team Coop, led by Paige Bueckers and Breanna Stewart, in the 2026 WNBA All-Star game on July 25 in Chicago.

De Souza Helps Survivor Crew Win at Henley

Dr. Kathryn de Souza helped an international crew of breast cancer survivors row to victory at the inaugural survivor row during the Henley Masters Regatta on England’s historic river thames.

The event celebrated resilience, recovery and the power of sport, bringing together women who have all faced and overcome breast cancer.

De Souza raced as part of the Heron Thames crew, a unique boat made up of athletes representing three countries and six different rowing clubs.

Despite training separately for most of the year, the crew came together for the regatta and quickly found their rhythm.

The crew posted a time of 4:16 to win its semifinal before returning to the water to capture the inaugural title in 4:17 in the final.

The victory represented more than a win on the water.

It served as a powerful symbol of survival, strength and teamwork, as women from different backgrounds united to compete on one of rowing’s most prestigious stages.
