NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prosecutors are seeking a sentence in the range of 30 to 40 years for a man who raped and killed a senior citizen when he broke into her home.

Justice Renae Mckay will sentence Jayvon Forbes for his crime on September 23.

72-year-old Vernencha Butler was getting ready for bed when Forbes, then 25, broke into her Ross Corner home on November 23, 2024.

Forbes raped Butler and he covered her mouth to muffle her screams, killing her by depriving her of oxygen.

Forbes passed out after the murder and rape and Butler’s relatives found him in her room.

Forbes pleaded guilty to murder without a plea deal.
