NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The World Health Organization reports a global increase in measles outbreaks.
W.H.O.’s Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals Director Dr. Kate O’Brien sounded the alarm during a press conference saying part of the issue is the fact that the pandemic has impacted vaccination rates among children.
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It is normally passed through direct contact and through the air and infects the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body.
According to World Health Organization statistics, in 2018 there were more than 140,000 measles deaths.
Most of those deaths were children under the age of five.
