NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A recent cholera case on New Providence has health officials beefing up protocols. Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville says there’s no need to be alarmed.

The health chief is cautioning residents to follow safety protocols but says there’s no need for panic.

His comments come one day after his ministry confirmed one case of cholera on New Providence.

Dr. Darville says the new case is prompting health officials to activate new protocols.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by an infection of the intestine with vibrio cholerae bacteria.

People can get sick when swallowing food or water contaminated with the cholera bacteria.

The disease has broken out in Haiti, which confirmed 32 cases as of October 9.

While the recent case has a history of travel, Dr. Darville confirmed the man did not travel to Haiti.

As contact tracing continues in this recent case, Dr. Darville says healthcare facilities are prepared in the event of an outbreak.
