UN: 96,000 Haitians Flee Homes

HAITI – The Haitian government is asking for the deployment of foreign troops as gang violence kidnapping and intimidation are forcing about 96,000 people to flee their homes in Port-au-Prince.

That’s the word for the U.N’s International Organization for Migration.

The IOM says gang-related violence has led to racketeering kidnappings and widespread criminal acts leading to a loss of basic human rights.

Gangs are believed to control up to 60 percent of Port-au-Prince – the capital raping women children and men and setting homes on fire as they fight to control more territory.

The widespread chaos follows last year’s assassination of president Jovenel Moise.

Supplies of fuel, water, and other basic goods are dwindling as cholera spreads raising concerns over the unhealthy state of government shelters filled with those fleeing the violence.
