Millions Needed For Upgrades To BDOC’s Remand Center

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A bad habit by inmates at the Department of Corrections has led to serious plumbing issues. That’s according to  officials, who explained the unusual practice has had a major impact. This as they also say millions is needed for upgrades to the Remand Center. 

Acting Commissioner of the Prison Doan Claire revealing the Remand Center at The Bahamas Department of Corrections has water issues due to inmates disposing of lit cigarettes  down the toilets.

The revelation came as National Security Minister Wayne Munroe led a of tour of the Remand Center Monday morning. 

The national security minister along with officials from the prison toured the Remand Center.

There it was revealed some of the work that’s already been completed and the works still ongoing. 

An assessment by the American Correctional Association, resulted in upgrades to facilities at The Bahamas Department of Corrections. 

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe says the report pointed out deficiencies at the prison. 

Cleare says upgrades are estimated to cost $2 million.

The remand facility will also see a new eating area for the inmates. 

There will also be a new facility to house juvenile inmates that’s expected to be completed on December 16th. 

He says so far over $100,000 was spent on remodeling.
